Is it safe for a female on Propranolol to remove Nexplanon?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a female having Nexplanon (a birth control implant) removed this month and need anesthesia to get it out of my arm. I am guessing Lidocaine is in the anesthesia. The problem is, I am terrified because I am taking 5 ml of Propranolol oral solution 40 mg daily. Some doctors have told me that it can be dangerous for Lidocaine and Propranolol to be mixed together, while others are telling me it is fine.

Is there any solution they can offer, or am I worrying over nothing?

I have a little girl, and I do not want anything to happen to me. I have been diagnosed with sinus tachycardia. I am extremely worried, and I kindly request your assistance.

Thank you.

Hello,

I am here to help you with your health queries.

I read about your concern in detail.

Removing the birth control implant is a very minor procedure, and Lidocaine is used for skin infiltration to provide anesthesia. You forgot to mention why you are taking Propranolol daily.

This procedure is usually performed by your obstetrician or gynecologist, who will use Lidocaine to numb the skin. There is no mixing with Propranolol in this case, and Lidocaine can be safely administered to patients taking Propranolol without any adverse reactions. So, remain tension-free and do not worry. Just inform your doctor who is performing the procedure about all the medications you are taking. That is all.

I hope I have resolved your query.

If you have any more doubts, feel free to contact me again. I will be happy to help.

Thank you.
