What is the cause for a mole in the eye for a long time, which is fixed and does not grow?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I do not have any special symptoms. I have had a mole for a long time, and it does not grow. It is not fixed; it can be moved. What is it? Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I have had a look at the photos you have sent (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), and I do not think you have anything to worry about. Since you do not have a history of it being there since childhood, we can likely classify it as primary acquired melanosis (PAM). If it were present in childhood, it would be called nevi. PAM can occur in some individuals around your age, especially in people exposed to sunlight and outdoor activities. What you need to do is to monitor it for a sudden increase in size. Check for an increase in vascularity (blood vessels are growing around it). Darkening of the lesion. Elevation above the surface. Fixation to the underlying surface of the conjunctiva (you said it is presently mobile, which is good).Any pain or tenderness in the location. If you develop any of the above signs or symptoms, you will need to have it looked at by an ophthalmologist. If they think it is suspicious, then an excision biopsy is performed. Your condition is suspected of primary acquired melanosis, and the symptoms should be monitored regularly. Regards.

Probable diagnosis

Your condition is suspected of primary acquired melanosis.

Treatment plan

The symptoms should be monitored regularly.
