Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 22-year-old female. I have bowel movements twice a week or every three days. Last week, I passed a stool that was firm, black, and brown. I did not take any medication and was concerned about what it could be. Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I can provide some information based on your symptoms. Passing a single, large, black stool (known as a "fecal occult blood" test positive) can be a sign of bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, or small intestine). However, the fact that you have not reported any other symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting makes it less likely that this is a serious medical condition.
The brown color in the stool may be due to the presence of bile, which is normally secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Bile gives stool its characteristic brown color.
It is essential to keep track of your bowel movements and any other symptoms you may be experiencing. If you continue to have infrequent bowel movements or notice any other concerning symptoms, it is best to consult a medical professional for further evaluation. They can perform additional tests and provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
I hope this information will help you.
Thank you.
