How can I prevent my bladder cancer recurrence at age 65?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 65-year-old man who was recently diagnosed with high-grade bladder cancer following a TURBT procedure. My urologist mentioned that BCG therapy will be started soon.

I would like to know the chances of recurrence after treatment and whether there are any lifestyle changes I should follow to help prevent disease progression.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

I understand that a new diagnosis of high-grade bladder cancer can be worrying, and it is good that you are asking these questions early.

After TURBT (transurethral resection of bladder tumor, a minimally invasive surgical procedure), starting BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin, a highly effective immunotherapy) therapy is the standard and most effective treatment for high-grade non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

The main goals of BCG therapy are to reduce the risk of recurrence and to prevent progression to muscle-invasive disease. With proper BCG induction and maintenance therapy, about 60 to 70 percent of patients remain recurrence-free in the long term.

Regular follow-up with cystoscopy (a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure) and urine tests is essential, as early detection of recurrence allows prompt treatment. You should adopt lifestyle changes. This will reduce risk and support treatment.

  1. Stop smoking.

  2. Drink plenty of fluids.

  3. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

  4. Maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active.

  5. Avoid exposure to industrial chemicals or dyes if relevant to your work.

  6. Take medications as prescribed and attend all follow-up visits as advised

Please remember that many patients with high-grade bladder cancer do very well with BCG therapy and careful follow-up. We will monitor you closely and adjust treatment if needed.

If you notice symptoms such as blood in urine, severe burning during urination, fever, or worsening urinary problems, please inform us promptly.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
