Can a low reticulocyte be a sign of bleeding disorder?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter underwent a few tests yesterday to diagnose a bleeding disorder. My second daughter and I also had bleeding issues. She also has a neuromuscular disease and some other complex medical history. The laboratory results are as follows. Blood work showed 0.08 % reticulocyte, 0.0394 10e6/uL Abs reticulocyte count, and IRF 2.3 %. All other laboratory results were completely normal. She has been extremely tired and having headaches for the past few months. Do these laboratory results are of concern for a bone marrow disorder?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. I reviewed your reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The reticulocyte count is low, but other parameters are normal. So the chances of erythropoiesis are less here, which is why the reticulocyte count might be low. It might be because of a bleeding disorder, not a bone marrow disorder. A bone marrow investigation will be needed only if the medical history is too complex. PT (prothrombin time) and aPTT (activated partial thromboplastin time) are normal in the reports shared, so coagulation is normal. A complete coagulation profile and a BT (bleeding time) test can be planned if the bleeding is persistent.

I suggest you to consult a specialist for further management.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
