Can hormonal changes cause a dark abdominal line?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been feeling bloated frequently and recently noticed a dark line appearing on my stomach, similar to the line seen during pregnancy. However, I am still menstruating and ovulating normally.

I became worried and started wondering what could be causing this. I also read online that weight gain might contribute to it.

Could this be related to hormonal changes, or is there another possible explanation?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

The dark line you are describing is likely a linea nigra, which is a line of increased skin pigmentation that commonly appears during pregnancy but can also occur in non-pregnant individuals due to hormonal changes.

In many cases, hormonal fluctuations related to the menstrual cycle or ovulation can contribute to this type of pigmentation. Natural skin pigmentation, genetics, and mild weight changes may also play a role.

Regarding bloating, this is commonly associated with hormonal changes during ovulation or the premenstrual phase. Digestive factors such as gas, dietary habits, stress, or fluid retention can also contribute.

The reassuring points in your case are that you are continuing to menstruate regularly and have not mentioned missed periods or other strong signs of pregnancy.

For reassurance, it would still be reasonable to perform a urine pregnancy test once, especially if there is any possibility of pregnancy.

If the dark line becomes more prominent or if you develop additional symptoms such as irregular periods, excessive hair growth, acne, severe abdominal pain, or unusual discharge, further evaluation may be needed to rule out hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

At present, your symptoms are more suggestive of hormonal and pigmentation-related changes rather than anything serious.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
