What are the risks and complications after blood transfusion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend is 30 years old. He met with an accident and needs blood for survival. I am going to give blood. So I would appreciate a brief overview of what a blood transfusion involves, including the types of components and the medical conditions for which it is typically prescribed.

Please provide insights into the safety measures taken during the blood transfusion process. Also, provide information on potential risks and complications associated with blood transfusions.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Blood transfusion is needed when the person loses blood due to accidents or for some medical conditions like anemia. The process behind it is that, if you donate blood, the pre-donated blood will be tested for matching, and it will be used for a person in need if your blood matches the blood group. All the needles and blood transfusion bags are sterile. It is only that you have to be healthy and weigh adequately with Hb (hemoglobin) in the normal range as per your age. The recipient may have a febrile illness or any allergic reaction to the component of blood, but the blood transfusion should be weighed by the need to save a life.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
