What complications can occur if a couple with a B-positive blood group plans to conceive in the future?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My partner and I both have the same blood group, B+. We are not blood relatives, but I am wondering if this similarity in blood type could potentially cause any issues when it comes to having children in the future. I would like to know if there are any specific concerns or risks related to having the same blood group.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Having the same blood group eliminates concerns regarding blood group compatibility for your future child. ABO and Rh are two different blood group systems commonly used. If your wife has a negative blood group (Rh negative), she may require an anti-D injection during delivery to prevent complications. However, since both of you have the same blood group, there is no need to worry about Rh compatibility.

To provide accurate advice, please provide the following information:

  1. Thalassemia testing: Have both of you been tested for thalassemia minor? If you have the test results, please share them for a better understanding of your situation.

  2. Complete blood count (CBC) and peripheral smear (PS) examination: Have you undergone these tests? If yes, please provide the reports. These results are relevant for assessing thalassemia status and other blood-related factors.

I hope this answer helped you,

Thank you.
