Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have two skin abscesses in the groin area. I am prone to having these and have been getting them since I was nine years old. They usually develop a head, and I squeeze out the pus, allowing them to heal. However, these do not have a head. I have started taking Amoxicillin pills twice a day. Will this resolve the issue?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. It seems you are having furunculosis (boils) or folliculitis in the groin area which is a deep bacterial infection of hair follicles. The cause of the re-occurrence of these boils due to Staphylococcus aureus is most commonly carried in the nostrils, armpits, between the legs, and in the cleft between the buttocks. It can spread to other sites from the nostrils via the fingernails.

I suggest you take the following measures-

1 If you are overweight, try to reduce your weight, and exercise daily.

2 Follow a balanced healthy diet with meat, plenty of fruit and vegetables.

3 Avoid smoking.

4 Wash your whole body once a day with soap or cleanser and water. Wash your hands several times daily or use antiseptic hand rubs.

5 Do not share your towel with other family members.

6 Maintain a clean handkerchief and do not touch your nose frequently.

7 Change your underclothes and night attire regularly.

8 Avoid activities that cause sweating and friction from clothing, such as squash and jogging.

9 If you are iron deficient, a course of iron tablets may help reduce infection.

10 Get your blood sugar test done.

For Treatment, I would suggest you take, oral antibiotics like tablet Augmentin 625 mg (if you are not allergic to penicillin group) one tds (three times a day) for five days and topical Mupirocin once or twice daily for five days after consulting the general practitioner or nearby dermatologist. Review if your problem persists.

I hope this helps you.

Regards.
