How to improve metabolism in a child with hypothalamic injury?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 10-year-old girl suffered a head injury that damaged her hypothalamus. Over time, she gained significant weight, mostly in her abdomen and face. Not only weight gain, but she also had sleep disturbances and struggled with low energy. That is when the doctor gave medicines to regulate metabolism and reduce her appetite. So we are also looking for advice from a dietitian who can help her with a low-calorie meal plan. Also, can we think of therapy to manage emotional eating and stress? Please let me know what needs to be done to get my kid on the right path. I want her to live happy and healthy. Please help.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

As a result of the brain injury, metabolism has been disturbed. Certain hormones released from the brain regulate our metabolism. Since metabolism is distributed, hormones from the brain are not secreted properly.

In this situation, you need to take medicine that will regulate the metabolism of the body.

You may take the help of a dietician and make a diet chart for your child; it will help a little bit but it is not sufficient; you have to take medicine to regulate metabolism until there is full recovery of the brain injury.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, and take care.

Regards.
