How to diagnose borderline personality disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I think I have BPD. Need assistance to confirm and get medication. I have anger outbursts and constant breakdowns. I do not have good relations with my family or my boyfriend, and I have minimal friends and social life. My long-term friendship is on the verge of breaking up, and everything is too much for me. I ended up self-harming a few days ago, and I got a severe panic attack as well.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate that you have chosen icliniq.com for your medical needs. I am here to give you the best care possible.

You may have a borderline personality disorder. It is a type of personality. You may have a chronic feeling of emptiness, emotional outbursts, overwhelming behavior, and self-harming behavior. You mostly feel that no one understands you in this world. You may have difficulty to keep the relationship for a long time. You may have frequent job-related issues. You may have anger outbursts. There is non-pharmacological management for it. You should try to follow the below guidelines for it.

  1. Exercise daily for 30 to 45 minutes, such as going for a walk.

  2. Practice meditation for 20 minutes daily. Sit in a comfortable position and focus on your normal breathing without trying to stop your thoughts; just let them be to help you relax.

  3. Eat healthy, home-cooked meals, and avoid junk food.

  4. Drink plenty of water.

  5. Spend quality time daily with friends and family.

  6. Engage in creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, or learning new skills, languages, or musical instruments.

  7. Get seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

  8. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, or any substance abuse.

  9. Live your life actively, not just passively.

  10. Be bold and confident.

  11. You should start a capsule of Fluoxetine 20 mg daily in the morning after breakfast and a tablet of Clonazepam 0.5 mg at night for sleep disturbances. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

If your symptoms persist after following this advice for four to six weeks, consider starting medications for a short duration. Hope I have clarified your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
