Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
These two weeks, though, I have bowel movements every day, but I pass very little stool each time. Will this cause bowel obstruction?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I read your query and understand your concern.
Passing small amounts of stool daily for two weeks does not usually cause bowel obstruction, especially if you are still able to pass stool and gas. True bowel obstruction typically presents with severe abdominal pain, progressive abdominal distension, vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, and worsening discomfort. What you are describing is more commonly related to constipation with incomplete evacuation, slow bowel movement, dehydration, low fiber intake, stress, or functional bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.
However, it is important not to ignore persistent changes in bowel habits. At 44 years of age, causes such as chronic constipation, pelvic floor dysfunction, hypothyroidism, medication side effects like calcium or iron supplements, and, less commonly, structural problems in the colon should be considered. You should increase water intake, add fiber gradually through fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, stay physically active, and avoid straining. If there is no improvement, a doctor may recommend stool softeners or further evaluation.
Please seek medical attention urgently if you develop severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, black stools, fever, or if you stop passing gas completely. To guide you better, I need to ask a few questions.
Are your stools hard or pellet-like?
Do you feel incomplete after using the toilet?
Have you had recent weight loss, blood in stool, anemia, or a family history of colon disease?
Are you taking any regular medicines or supplements?
Kindly revert with the above queries so that I can help you in detail.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
