Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 49-year-old woman who was treated for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer with surgery, chemotherapy, and Tamoxifen three years ago. Recently, my scans showed bone metastases, and my oncologist has now recommended treatment with a CDK4/6 inhibitor along with hormonal therapy.
I would like to understand how effective these newer medications are in extending survival and maintaining quality of life in metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. I am also concerned about side effects and would like to know which complications or symptoms I should monitor most carefully during treatment.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
CDK4/6 inhibitors have become one of the most important advances in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer.
These medications work by blocking proteins involved in cancer cell growth and division, thereby slowing disease progression.
When combined with hormonal therapy, CDK4/6 inhibitors have shown significant improvements in progression-free survival and, in many patients, overall survival.
Many individuals can maintain daily activities and quality of life for longer periods while on this treatment approach.
Commonly used CDK4/6 inhibitors include Palbociclib, Ribociclib, and Abemaciclib. These drugs are generally effective in controlling disease progression, especially in patients with bone metastases and hormone-sensitive cancer.
The most important side effects to monitor include:
Regular blood tests and follow-up visits are important during treatment to monitor blood counts, liver function, and overall tolerance to therapy.
Many patients tolerate these medications reasonably well with proper monitoring and dose adjustments when needed. Your oncology team will tailor the treatment based on your response, side effects, and overall health status.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
