Patient's Query
Hello, Doctor,
My mother is 49 years old and was recently diagnosed with breast cancer after she felt a lump in her right breast. Her biopsy confirmed malignancy, and imaging suggests the tumor is localized without obvious distant spread.
Her doctor discussed options including surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, depending on final pathology results. We are feeling overwhelmed by the treatment choices and their possible side effects. Please tell me,
How do doctors decide the best treatment plan for breast cancer?
What factors influence whether chemotherapy is required?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
She had been diagnosed with breast cancer, in which initial imaging shows localised disease, which is a good sign. The management of breast cancer needs a multidisciplinary team (MDT) that includes a surgeon, oncologist, radiologist, and pathologist.
It depends on factors like,
Tumor stage.
Biology.
Grade of tumor.
Patient factors (general health, age).
Tumor staging will tell you the size of the tumor, lymph node involvement, and metastasis. After that, surgeons will decide if it is a localized tumor or an advanced disease.
For large tumors and advance one patient needs pre-operative chemotherapy to shrink the size of the tumor, followed by surgery. This can be,
Breast conserving surgery(lumpectomy).
Radiotherapy or mastectomy, depending on tumor size versus breast size, location, and patient preference.
Tumor biology is the one that determines the type of chemotherapy she needed. Triple-positive hormone receptor breast cancer patients have a good prognosis, while triple negative one is aggresive tumor and a bad prognosis.
Your mother’s management depends on all those factors. It can be surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or hormonal therapy.
I hope this information helps you.
Feel free to ask further queries.
Thank you.
