How to treat breast cancer metastasis in a 42-year old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 42-year-old cousin was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, and we are trying to understand what it means. The doctor said it had spread to her bones. Does that mean she is in the last stage? She is losing a lot of weight and feels very weak. What can we give her to make her stronger? Is chemotherapy the only option, or can she try other treatments like immunotherapy? She also gets pain in her back. Could it be from the cancer?

We are scared about how fast this can spread to other organs. Is there any way to slow it down or stop it? She is also worried about losing her hair. How can we support her emotionally during this time? Are there any chances of recovery, or is it just about managing the symptoms now?

Kindly provide your guidance.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Yes, if cancer has spread to the bones, it means it is in the last stage. She needs bisphosphonate therapy (bone-strengthening agents) on a monthly basis if renal parameters are normal. She also needs psychological, social, and family support. She can survive for many years with the best quality of life with the latest anticancer medicines.

However, the treatment and prognosis depend on the biopsy report details and the molecular profile of the tumor, including hormonal and HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) status.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
