What are the risks of delaying chemotherapy for breast cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 34-year-old neighbor just had a mastectomy three weeks ago for stage 2 breast cancer. She is now thinking about delaying chemotherapy because she feels okay otherwise. Could this increase her chances of recurrence? She also thinks that getting prepared with immune-boosting foods can change the side effects of chemotherapy. Is there truth in that? Could vitamin C or zinc have some impact?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Delaying chemotherapy after a mastectomy for stage 2 breast cancer could increase the risk of recurrence, as chemotherapy targets microscopic cancer cells that may not have been removed during surgery. Starting treatment on schedule is crucial for better outcomes. Immune-boosting foods can support overall strength, but would not replace or significantly alter chemotherapy effects.

Emphasize lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support recovery. Vitamins and other supplements can interfere with the effectiveness of chemotherapy, so they should only be taken under a doctor’s guidance. A balanced diet usually provides adequate nutrients. Encourage her to consult her oncologist to address concerns and stay on track with treatment.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
