What are the breast cancer detection methods for women?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old female. Sometimes, I get pain in my right breast for a month. I suspect that I may have a health issue. I am curious to know when it is advisable to start regular breast cancer screenings. I would appreciate guidance on the various screening methods available, including mammography, breast ultrasound, and MRI, as understanding the benefits and limitations of each would be valuable in making informed decisions.

Please provide recommendations on how often one should undergo breast cancer screening. In addition to regular screenings, what are the signs and symptoms of breast cancer that need immediate medical attention? Are there lifestyle changes that can contribute to breast health and reduce the risk of developing breast cancer?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query. I can understand your concern.

Breast cancer screening should begin at age 40. A mammogram is the best instrument for this purpose; magnetic resonance imaging may be suggested for people who are at high risk or who have very worrisome lesions.

Women should undergo mammography every other year. The signs and symptoms of early breast cancer are a painless lump in the breast or axilla. The risk factors for developing breast cancer are as follows:

Family history of breast or ovarian cancer, obesity, hormonal replacement therapy, sedentary lifestyle, early menarche, late menopause, breastfeeding, and multifarious factors are protective and reduce the risk of breast cancer.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
