What causes a pubic area rash after surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently underwent breast cancer surgery, and I believe that after administering general anesthesia, they removed my pubic hair before the procedure. It has been 10 days now, and I am experiencing severe burning, rashes, cuts, and dry skin around my pubic area. What should I do?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I know how you feel discomfort about this, but let us take a look at your situation.

Based on the picture you sent, it may be obvious that you have developed a furunculosis, a pustular skin rash, possibly from the infected or blunt blade that was used to shave your pubic hair during your breast cancer removal. So, in order to have a proper diagnosis, I will ask you to do a skin swab test to rule out possible bacteria, fungi, or viral infection, and kindly share the report with me.

There are possibly treatment options I can render at this point that will help with your skin ailment:

  • Please apply topical Clindamycin ointment twice daily for two weeks.
  • Cefuroxime 500 mg (milligrams) orally twice daily for two weeks.
  • Acyclovir 800 mg orally twice daily for two weeks.
  • Ketoconazole 200 mg orally twice daily for two weeks.

I hope this helps.

Please follow up if you have any further concerns.

Thank you.
