What are the advancements in breast cancer treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer two years ago, and my current treatment seems to be losing effectiveness as my recent scans show disease progression. My oncologist mentioned exploring other therapies, but I am unsure which options might be best for me.

What are some of the latest treatments available for metastatic breast cancer? Are there any clinical trials or newer therapies that I should consider? I want to understand my choices to make an informed decision moving forward.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The main treatment strategies for metastatic breast cancer involve chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. As your current treatment seems to be losing effectiveness, here are some options that your oncologist may explore:

  1. Targeted therapies: Focus on specific molecules involved in cancer cell growth.

  2. Immunotherapy: Drugs like Atezolizumab (Tecentriq) and Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) have been approved for TNBC (triple negative breast cancer) in combination with chemotherapy. These drugs help the immune system recognize and fight cancer cells more effectively.

  3. Chemotherapy.

  4. Bone-targeted therapies: If you have bone metastases, medications like Bisphosphonates or Denosumab can help prevent complications and reduce bone pain.

  5. Clinical trials to explore new therapies that are not yet widely available but may offer cutting-edge treatments. Your oncologist can guide you.

  6. PARP Inhibitors (poly-ADP ribose polymerase): If your cancer has BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations (breast cancer gene), PARP inhibitors can be a useful chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy.

Get well soon. I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
