What could cause a painful swelling in my right breast?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I woke up to a small swelling in my right breast. It is firm and painful, and the surrounding skin is red and warm to the touch. I am not breastfeeding or anything. I am really worried about what it could be. Prior to that, I do breast self-exams often. I also noticed a small, painful swelling in my armpit. However, there is no warmth or redness.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Based on your description, it seems you may be experiencing an acute breast infection or inflammation, such as mastitis or a localized breast abscess, even though you are not breastfeeding.

The firmness, pain, redness, warmth of the skin, and tender swelling in the armpit suggest an infection that may involve nearby lymph nodes, which often occurs as the body responds to inflammation. This condition can develop suddenly and escalate over a day or two.

Although breast cancer is a concern for many, it is much less likely in your case. Cancer typically does not present with the sudden onset of pain, redness, warmth, and rapid swelling.

However, it is important to seek prompt medical evaluation, as untreated infections can worsen. I strongly advise you to see a doctor for a breast examination as soon as possible.

You might need antibiotics and an ultrasound to rule out the presence of an abscess. In the meantime, please avoid squeezing the affected area, wear a supportive bra, and consider taking a mild pain reliever if necessary.

One important question: Have you experienced any recent skin injury, shaving cut, or pimple near the breast or armpit before these symptoms started?

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.
