Why did a breast spot become more raised after being picked?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a raised spot on my breast. I picked it, and now it is raised. I have a family history of breast cancer. I am feeling scared.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I understand the extent of the fear you are experiencing, especially given your family history of breast cancer. I know you are scared because some relatives have had cancer, but I want to reassure you that they are second-degree relatives, not first-degree ones. This means your family history is considered weak, and it should not be a source of concern for us.

As we discussed, this family history is quite distant, so there is no need to worry about it. The concern you have remains the same size as it was during your last examination.

These changes are likely hormonal fluctuations that occur every month, so there’s no need for you to be afraid. As long as the issue is small, located in the skin, and not firm like bone, we do not have to be concerned.

I want you to feel reassured; your health is good, and I wish you well. I am always here to support you and ready to help at any time. Please don’t hesitate to ask me anything.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, and I would be happy to assist you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your response.

I have attached a photo. My doctor examined me five weeks ago, and everything was normal. This issue appeared last night. Could it be cancer?

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I examined the picture carefully (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), and I can confidently say that this is not cancer. The issue appears to be something very small on the surface of the skin. In our discussions, we agreed that a cancerous growth would typically be the size of an olive and have a hard texture, whereas this is clearly not the case.

There is no palpable lump, and the inflammation seems to be entirely superficial. This is most likely just a minor skin irritation, and there is no need for you to worry at all.

I assuredly looked at the picture multiple times to confirm that there is nothing concerning. You can be reassured that you do not have anything serious.

As an oncology doctor, I am not worried about this situation at all, and I do not see any relation to cancer. Thus, I encourage you to live your life with ease and comfort.

Regarding the bump that has appeared, you can use any emollient cream on it. If you have an antibiotic cream, that would be beneficial. If not, consider using Hydrocortisone cream, as it should provide good results.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, and I would be happy to assist you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi look at my right armpit it has a dimple I’m scared
Hello Hima, how are you? How have you been? I hope you are well. I looked at the images you sent and examined them very carefully and thoroughly. I see that they look normal to me. I know you’re worried about cancer because there is a family history of it. But I want to reassure you that, from what I saw in the images, there is no problem. The underarm area looks healthy and normal. There might be a little—you might feel some redness, or you might feel a lump, but the lump does not appear at all. As I told you before, the lumps that appear in this area are usually the size of an olive, very firm, located in the underarm, and not painful this dimple you noticed Is completely normal with hormonal changes every month. I am sure these things are not present in your case because they do not appear in the images at all. I hope this explanation is clear. If you have any questions, I am here with you, so don’t worry or be afraid. There’s nothing concerning. Relax and be calm. And enjoy your life.

Patient's Query

It’s a dent and it feels Ropey
I want to reassure you and tell you that it’s normal for you to feel that it’s a bit dented or rubbery. This could be due to hormonal changes if we are in the ovulation period or during the menstruation period. If we are in the ovulation phase or during the period itself, it’s very normal to have some changes in the lymph nodes under the arm. Why? Because they are related to the breast. And of course, this could also be because you recently shaved or used creams in that area. As I always tell you and advise you, it’s better that we wash this area very well with warm water and soap, and preferably avoid using any creams during this time. If you are using deodorant, it may also help to stop it for two or three days so the area doesn’t have any abnormal sensation that you’re feeling. I hope what I’m saying is clear to you, and I want you to be reassured. Don’t be scared at all, don’t worry. So far, you are completely far from this being anything like cancer. I’ve examined you before, and the GP examined you as well, and we all reassure you that there is nothing frightening and nothing serious showing in your case. I wish you a happy day, and I hope you feel calm and reassured.

Patient's Query

Gp didn’t examine my armpit
Hello dear Haima, I know that no examination was done for you. Your GP didn’t examine your underarm because there are no related symptoms in the breast. He saw that your breast is normal, so he didn’t need to check the underarm. But when I spoke to you over video and performed the examination, I didn’t feel anything abnormal. I also explained to you how we can detect if something is abnormal by the size of the lymph node itself—it is usually like an olive and very firm. I don’t think you currently have anything like that. The images you sent me, I looked at them very carefully and examined them thoroughly, and I found that there’s nothing abnormal. On the contrary, they look healthy, and the skin over them looks completely normal. I hope this is clear for you, and there’s no need for fear. Please reassure me that you are fine and feeling great, with nothing wrong.

Patient's Query

--file attached--
Hello my dear Hima, I looked at the images you sent and examined them very carefully. I don’t see anything unusual or abnormal. On the contrary, the skin looks healthy, there’s nothing hard underneath, and I don’t see any lumps. I don’t feel anything abnormal. You’re just worried, and I want you to feel reassured—don’t worry at all, and don’t be afraid. There’s nothing wrong with you that’s related to cancer. You are very far from having cancer, very far from breast cancer, and very far from having any affected axillary lymph nodes. The axilla looks healthy and normal; there’s nothing serious and nothing to be concerned about. I hope my words reassure you, and I hope you don’t worry and enjoy your day.

Patient's Query

Is it just normal creases as they look different on left side to right side
Hello Hima, I’m sorry I replied late to you. First of all, I want to tell you that it is indeed just a normal crease, but you must know that the right side of our body is different from the left side. Meaning, there are differences between the right and the left, but every human being knows their own body parts. That’s why when we do the monthly self-examination for the breast and the armpit, we become more familiar with the shape and nature of our body. And we can identify the natural differences that God created us with — the ones we are originally born with. After that, if any new developments happen or any differences appear that are clearly noticeable and look unusual, and we can feel them with our hands, only then do we worry and decide to do tests or let a doctor examine us or something like that. But until now, everything with you is perfectly fine and completely normal, and there is absolutely no reason for fear or worry. As I told you before, you are completely far from cancer, so don’t think about it and don’t let your mind go there

Patient's Query

Here is picture
Good evening Hima , I saw the picture and I noticed the dimple. It looks completely normal and totally fine. It can actually appear on the left and not on the right, or the opposite—just like the dimples people have on their faces. You know how some people have a dimple on one side but not the other? It’s exactly the same thing. You have a dimple in this underarm and not in the other one. This is completely normal. As I told you, our right side isn’t typically identical to our left side. And as I also said, some people have a dimple on the right side of their face and not on the left. So this is totally normal, nothing to worry about at all. It’s just a natural feature of your body, like many people have. There is absolutely nothing concerning about it."

Patient's Query

Just showing left armpit
Yes it's normal unilateral dimple. Don't worry about it it is not cancer at all . It is normal and your axilla looks normal and healthy nothing to be afraid from . Keep calm and enjoy your life

Patient's Query

Look at this photo when I stretch skin the dimple is still there
Hello dear, good evening to you. I saw the two pictures you sent, and I focused very carefully on the dimple you’re describing. It really doesn’t disappear when you pull the skin over it, and this is also proof that it’s something natural. If it were related to the fatty glands, then when you moved your arm or moved the skin over it, the lump would stay in one place and the skin would move separately — they would be two separate things. But this means that it is something normal. And as I told you, it’s completely normal for it to appear on one side and not on the other. This is very common, just like any dimple, like any natural indentation that appears on a person’s face, as I told you, or in many places on the body. It doesn’t have to be only on the face — some people have it on their shoulder or on their leg. It can be on the right side and not necessarily on the left side, for example. So I’m reassuring you and telling you that this is something completely unrelated to cancer. Don’t be scared and don’t let the thought even cross your mind that it could be something abnormal or something pathological. You are absolutely fine and you don’t have anything worrying. I wish you a good night and a calm life free of fear.

Patient's Query

Hello this morning I took photo please see
Hello, good morning my dear, how are you? I hope you are well. Yes, you sent me three pictures, and I looked at them well, I checked all three. There is nothing abnormal; all three look very good. The dimple in the axilla is normal and natural, as I told you, this is something very normal. It’s just like a dimple that appears on the face or any part of the body. Its shape is completely normal, and it has no relation to any pathology. The axilla looks good; its colors appear very natural. The body looks very good, and it doesn’t have any lumps or any irregularities. It looks normal, completely normal. I hope you don’t worry, and don’t let thoughts of cancer bother you at all. You are very far from having cancer. I hope your breast is normal, and the axilla is normal as well. Don’t think of anything bad, and relax and enjoy your day. I wish you a happy day.

Patient's Query

Im very scared
I wish you well, Hema. How are you? Why are you scared, and why are you worried? I wanted to reassure you that you have absolutely nothing. The issue of cancer is completely far from you, even the family history you mentioned is distant, and the second-degree history is extremely far from ever affecting you. We checked on you, examined you, looked at the breast, and I taught you how to do the self-examination yourself. I also taught you how to do the underarm examination on your own. Why are you afraid? Don’t be. The matter is not frightening at all — it is a very, very simple issue. You don’t have anything. You are not diagnosed with cancer, and you don’t have the genetic predisposition for it. So what are we afraid of? There is nothing that should make you scared. You might be afraid of something else, or carrying many responsibilities in your life… things you are overburdening yourself with. But don’t put the stress of cancer in your mind at all. It is completely far from you. Your health is good, thank God. You are perfectly fine. I’ve seen you several times and looked at all your photos — all of them — and examined everything. There is absolutely nothing alarming. Don’t be afraid. Be reassured. You are completely fine. Please be calm and make sure I am with you and don't hesitate to ask any question at any time. Take care of your self I have examined the recent photos you sent and I am sure It's normal and healthy don't worry about it

Patient's Query

I suffer with anxiety health anxiety. I need medication to help me .
God’s mercy and blessings. I know and understand that you feel worried and scared about the topic of cancer, and you think about it a lot. This overthinking you have is, by the way, something normal. Many women over 35, even if no one in their family has cancer, still think about cancer. But your problem is that you think about it constantly, and this has really affected your day, your thoughts, and everything in your life — even though you are healthy and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you. I know this could be a psychological condition, and I know you might need medication at this point. But unfortunately, I am an oncology doctor; my specialty is Oncology. I prescribe medication only for people who already have cancer. But for someone who does not have cancer, the only thing I can do is reassure you and calm you down and tell you that you do not have anything. I studied your case from every angle — you have absolutely nothing. Even your medical history is very far from anything concerning. So I want you to feel reassured and calm down. And I advise you to see a psychiatrist, someone specialized in psychological conditions. They can discuss with you how to help you get out of this fear and anxiety. And if you need medication or anything, they will be able to prescribe it for you. But unfortunately, this is outside my specialty, and I cannot prescribe any medication in this area. But if you want to ask anything about Oncology, or you need any consultation from me at any time, I am at your service. I am with you, and don’t be scared or worried. And you actually don’t need medication, by the way. You don’t need any drugs. All you need is to change your way of thinking. Think about the good things you have. Think about the fact that your health is good. Think about how many activities you can do. And try to engage yourself in things far away from Oncology, far away from cancer, far away from bad news. I hope my words are helpful for you. And I hope that if you need anything at any time, I am here for you and at your service. You are my sister, and I’m happy that I got to know you. I wish you continued health and wellness.

Patient's Query

Thank you my sister I appreciate your support

This morning photo from different angles 1. Underneath angle 2. Stretched from facing redness is from pulling skin up
Good morning, my dear. How are you? I hope you’re doing very well, and I wish you a happy day. I saw the photos you sent, I looked at both pictures, examined them well, and checked every part of them carefully. There is nothing abnormal at all, believe me. Your underarm is completely healthy. There is nothing indicating any lymph node issue, enlargement, or any problem. And this makes us say that we are completely far from the topic of cancer. Please be reassured, I’m telling you there is nothing, and I am sure of what I’m telling you. You need to be reassured and stop the excessive fear of cancer and the fear of having something bad. Believe me, you have no pathology; you are completely healthy, and the skin and lymph nodes in this area are 100% healthy. I wish you a happy day, and I hope you stop being afraid of cancer or anything else ever again.

Patient's Query

I wish i could see you in person sister I appreciate your support
I also wish I could reassure you here in London, and that I could see you and meet you to reassure you face to face. But unfortunately, we are far apart in distance, yet we have become close to each other, so don’t worry and don’t be afraid — I am always by your side. And if you ever feel afraid at any time, or if you want to send any question at any time, I am at your service. I wish you health, wellness, and peaceOf Mind

Patient's Query

I know I appreciate and value you support.
A lot of thanks my dear
