Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
After having an abortion four years ago, I have noticed that breast milk comes out whenever I press my breasts. Despite taking the recommended medications and undergoing tests, the issue remains. Could you please help me with this? Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear about what you are experiencing, and I understand how concerning it must be.
Breast milk production after an abortion or miscarriage can occur due to several factors, even after some time. It is typically related to hormonal changes, particularly prolactin, which is responsible for milk production. Some potential causes include:
Hormonal imbalance: After a pregnancy or abortion, your body may still be adjusting to changes in hormone levels, leading to lactation.
Prolactinoma: This benign tumor of the pituitary gland can cause an overproduction of prolactin, resulting in milk production.
Medications: Certain medications can trigger lactation as a side effect.
Stress: Both physical and emotional stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that may cause lactation.
Since you have already undergone tests and followed treatments without improvement, it might be beneficial to revisit your healthcare provider for further evaluation. A blood test to measure hormone levels, including prolactin, and thyroid function, may help. Depending on the results, an ultrasound or referral to an endocrinologist or a specialist in women’s health may be necessary to explore other underlying conditions.
If you can share additional information, such as any medications you are taking or your overall health, it would help guide the next steps.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
