Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 42-year-old woman and have had on-and-off pain in my left breast for the past 10 years. It often radiates to my left upper back and sometimes to my upper abdomen, mostly in the evening or at night, making it hard to sleep.
I have had ECG, TMT, Doppler, chest X-ray, and CT scan, and all results were normal. Since giving birth 6 years ago, I also feel my heart fluttering while lying down. I was diagnosed with thyroid issues during the same period.
Could you please help me understand what might be causing this ongoing pain and how to manage it? Please help.
Thank you for your time and guidance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Based on your long-standing symptoms and the normal results from your heart and lung evaluations (ECG or electrocardiogram, TMT or tread mill test, Doppler, chest X-ray, and CT (computerized tomography) scan), the most likely cause of your chest pain appears to be musculoskeletal, possibly due to costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone) or a muscle strain in the chest or upper back area.
This type of pain is quite common, especially among women, and can be triggered or worsened by factors such as poor posture, stress, repetitive strain, or even hormonal changes. It often radiates from the chest to the upper back or abdomen and tends to feel more noticeable in the evening, when muscles are more fatigued.
The good news is that this type of pain is benign, though it can be persistent. Management typically includes:
Warm compresses.
Gentle stretching or light physiotherapy.
Maintaining good posture.
Avoiding heavy lifting.
Using supportive pillows at night.
If needed, a short course of anti-inflammatory medication may also help ease the discomfort.
I hope this helps.
Please revert in case of further queries.
Thank you.
