Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Is it safe to consume 0.5 mg of Alprazolam while breastfeeding my 18-month-old? I had anticipated weaning by now, but she is still nursing, and I want assurance that taking this medication would not pose any risks to her well-being. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Taking Alprazolam while breastfeeding typically does not harm a breastfed baby, according to literature. However, it does pass into breast milk and may cause some sedative effects on the baby if taken regularly and in high doses.
Your dosage is acceptable, and at 18 months, your daughter's milk consumption is likely minimal. Therefore, the amount she receives is insignificant. I suggest there is no need to worry as it is unlikely to harm her, and you can continue breastfeeding until she reaches two years of age.
As a precaution, monitor her sleep patterns. If she oversleeps or seems less active, I suggest you may need to discontinue breastfeeding. Consult your doctor and take the medicines accordingly.
I hope this helps.
Please revert to assist you further.
Thank you.
