Why does a baby cry during breastfeeding sessions?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby boy will be one month old. He is not sleeping well. He wakes up every 15 to 20 minutes, including during the night. He also cries during feeding. He latches on, then leaves the breast and cries, and then latches on again.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

According to the details provided, your one-month-old baby has problems with feeding. The child cries while feeding, attaches himself and detaches from the breast, sleeps for 15-20 minutes, and wakes up after that. I completely understand your worries.

There are several aspects that play a key role in proper feeding. The first one is feeding techniques, which require the right positioning and latching. The baby should be able to take the nipple along with the areola (the dark area around the nipple) into the mouth. Only then can he effectively express milk from the breast. If he takes only the nipple into his mouth, he may start biting on it, receive little or no milk, become irritated, and start crying.

Please check whether you have sufficient milk secretion. If he is not receiving enough milk, he may behave in this way.

Moreover, check whether there are some problems associated with the breast itself, such as big nipples that make it difficult for him to hold or big and heavy breasts due to extra milk production. In case extra milk gets into his mouth all of a sudden, he may not manage to swallow it and will pull away from the breast.

The odor change of the breast due to a new body lotion, cream or even fragrance may sometimes result in difficulties in feeding him.

Please provide information about his birth weight and current weight in order to see if he gets enough milk.

Was he born on time or prematurely?

I would suggest that first you check your breasts for problems with the nipples, milk production, and heaviness due to extra milk production. In case you produce extra milk, you can squeeze out a little bit before giving him to the breast.

Clean your breasts with water before feeding and then give him milk in the correct position. It may solve this problem.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
