How to manage bump around the groin area?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is three years old, and he has a bump around the groin area. Can you please help?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the photograph (image hidden to protect the identity of the patient) and the limited information, it is a small inguinal hernia. Does it become more obvious while crying and reduces while sleeping?

It needs to be confirmed with sonography and if confirmed needs a consultation with a pediatric surgeon. Consult your family doctor, get a sonography, and then get an appointment with a pediatric surgeon.

You can always come back and reach me at icliniq.com.

Thank you for consulting me.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response.

Yes, we had sonography, but it did not show anything. And yes, when he is crying, it gets hard, but it goes away when he rests. Should we get a second sonography to confirm if the hernia is present?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, with the information you provided, there is a strong suspicion of an inguinal hernia; I suggest you either get another sonography while he is active or even crying. Otherwise, you can get an appointment with a pediatric surgeon.

Right now, it subsides when he is not active or when he is sleeping, so everything is safe. Also, it is small, so no acute emergency. Confirm first, need to rule out any other possibility.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi Dr., I have attached the previous sonography. So the hearnia can only be seen when it is at its major bulging? The sonography was done with minor bulging. Thank you, Alexei
Hi Keanu, Yes, the previous sonography does not show any thing , even it is mention no bulging during standing , but now with the photograph you have posted -- there is a bulge. It is possible to miss it if it is minor. Its almost 6 months since last sonography, You can go for another and they should look at the scrotum region also. Taking an appointment with a Pediatric surgeon is always recommended in this situation. Again , its small so not to worry but just get it confirmed and ruling-out any other possibilities.
