How do I treat a painless bump on the penis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a skin-colored bump on the lower side of the shaft of my penis. It is a single bump with no pain, except for slight discomfort due to friction. It has been there for seven days without increasing or decreasing in size.

For the past two days, I have felt a mild throbbing pain on the top of my penis, but not during urination.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome, and thank you for reaching out.

I have read through your query carefully, and I do understand why this has been worrying you.

So based on what you have described, this looks like a localized bacterial skin infection. These kinds of infections are actually more common. They can develop from something as small as a tiny break in the skin, a bit of friction, or mild irritation in the area. The skin in that region is sensitive and does not take much for bacteria to find a way in.

In terms of treatment, I would suggest starting with a topical antibiotic ointment. Mupirocin 2 % applied twice daily for one week should help. Just use a thin layer and make sure you keep the area clean and dry between applications.

In addition, a short course of oral antibiotics may be needed. Options such as Amoxicillin, Cefadroxil, or Cephalexin are typically used in these situations, as directed by your doctor. Whichever one you are prescribed, please make sure you finish the full course even if things start looking better before the week is up.

Stopping early is one of the most common reasons these infections come back.

Do keep a close eye on things. If you notice increased swelling, spreading redness, fever, or worsening pain, please seek attention promptly.

You should start seeing improvement within a few days. Feel free to reach out with any further questions.

Thank you.
