The C-cells of the thyroid gland secretes calcitonin. It has the opposite function of parathyroid hormones. They regulate the serum calcium and phosphate levels. Calcitonin inhibits the activity of the bone-destroying osteoclastic cells, thereby reducing the release of calcium into the bloodstream. Increased serum calcium increases calcitonin secretion and vice versa. They also decrease the calcium reabsorption by the kidneys. Abnormal calcitonin levels are indicative of nodular thyroid diseases and medullary thyroid carcinoma.
