How to prevent candida auris infection?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My dad’s in a nursing facility recovering from a stroke, and the place recently had a few cases of Candida auris. I have read some pretty scary stuff online about how hard it is to treat and how it spreads. The staff said they are doing extra cleaning, but I am worried – is he at high risk since he is on a feeding tube and catheter? Should we be asking for testing even if he has no symptoms? And how does someone even get this? Also, if I visit him regularly, can I carry it back home to my family?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Candida auris poses a significant threat due to its resistance to various antifungal treatments and its capacity to transmit within healthcare environments. Your father is particularly vulnerable because of his feeding tube and catheter, which may serve as potential gateways for infection.
Even in the absence of symptoms, it would be wise to request testing, especially in light of the recent outbreaks in the facility. Candida auris can be transmitted through contact with contaminated surfaces or medical equipment, and healthcare personnel may unintentionally transport it.
Adhering to stringent hygiene protocols, including thorough handwashing and the use of protective equipment, during your visit is crucial to reducing the likelihood of bringing the infection home.
I hope this information helps you.
