Can a combination of antibiotic and steroid medications, along with hot fomentation, help treat a chalazion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have developed pimple-like swellings above both of my eyelids after having a facial a month ago. I consulted a nearby doctor who prescribed Gentamicin drops for the first two weeks. However, since the swelling has not disappeared, the doctor has now prescribed a combination of Clobetasol and Salicylic Acid ointment until it resolves. Could you please confirm if this is the appropriate course of treatment? I have also attached photos for your reference.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Based on the attached pictures, it appears that there are multiple chalazions. I suggest you take tablet Augmentin 625mg three times a day, tablet of Paracetamol with Serratiopeptidase twice a day, and an eye ointment containing Polymyxin-B sulfate, Chloramphenicol, and Dexamethasone twice a day. Additionally, apply hot fomentation for five minutes, twice a day. Please continue this regimen for a week. If the chalazion does not show improvement during this time, they may need to be removed in the outpatient department (OPD). One of them is currently inflamed, and it may rupture within the next day or two.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Could you please provide me with a prescription for these medications?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

These are all over-the-counter drugs, which means you can obtain them from any medical store without a prescription. I am attaching a prescription below, but please note that hot fomentation is the primary treatment method in this case.

Thank you.
