What causes low platelets and WBCs post non-Hodgkin's lymphoma chemotherapy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can you help me understand why I have reduced platelet and white blood cell counts following chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

During chemotherapy, potent drugs target both cancer and healthy hematopoietic (the process of blood cell formation) cells. This can suppress bone marrow function, reducing platelets and white blood cells, which are produced there. If bone marrow suppression happens, these cell counts decrease.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
