Could persistent right chest pain be heart-related?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am experiencing chest pain on the upper right side near my armpit that has persisted for over nine hours. I was born with a congenital heart defect (a hole in my heart), and a few years ago, I was diagnosed with a small heart valve. I occasionally experience mild discomfort in this area after drinking coffee, but it typically resolves quickly.
Today, however, the pain began and has not subsided. I am unsure whether this is heart-related or possibly a muscle strain. As I do not have health insurance, I would prefer to avoid seeking medical care unless this is considered an emergency.
Please help.
Thank you for your guidance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Pain on the right side of your chest, which can last for a number of hours and occurs around your armpit, may have more to do with your muscles or chest wall. Also, the fact that you have experienced previous episodes of short-lived pain after drinking coffee may give a hint towards your current condition being related to your muscles or nerves, and not your heart. This is because your previous episodes were not related to your heart.
Chest pains that are heart-related are typically experienced in the center or the left part of the chest. These are usually experienced in the form of pressure or weight. Additionally, there may also be other symptoms that are experienced. These may include difficulty in breathing, dizziness, perspiration, or radiating pains in the arm or jaw.
As for your situation, you can try to avoid caffeine, rest your body, apply a warm compress to the area, and take pain medicine if needed. Additionally, you can try stretching if it is the pain is coming from your muscles.
Notwithstanding your background with the congenital heart condition, you should seek care if the pain becomes severe, widespread, or is associated with shortness of breath, palpitations, syncope, or nausea, even in the absence of health insurance.
I hope the information helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
