Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am an 18-year-old girl. Since this evening, I have been feeling a strong pain on the left side of my chest, like pressure or squeezing. Now the pain has started to spread to my left arm, and I am terrified. There is no one available to take me to the hospital right now, and my mom is with my grandmother at the hospital.
Is my condition serious? What do you recommend I do?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I hope you are fine. Thank you for reaching out, and I want to first acknowledge how frightening your symptoms must feel. Chest pain, especially when described as pressure or squeezing and spreading to the left arm, should never be ignored, regardless of age. While severe heart conditions are less common in someone of your age, there are still several possible causes, including inflammation of the heart (like pericarditis or myocarditis), musculoskeletal strain, anxiety-related symptoms, or even gastrointestinal issues.
However, given the radiation of pain to your arm, it is safest to treat this as urgent. Here is what I strongly suggest you do:
Seek medical attention immediately. If no adult is available to drive you, please call emergency services (ambulance) without delay. It is better to be evaluated and reassured than to wait and risk a more serious complication.
Stay calm and seated or lying down, avoid physical effort, and do not take any unknown medications or supplements without medical supervision.
Avoid caffeine or energy drinks, as these can sometimes worsen symptoms like chest pain or palpitations.
Once you are in a safe place and have been medically evaluated, we can discuss possible treatment options and determine whether any further tests, such as an ECG (echocardiogram) or blood work, are needed.
Please know you are not alone in this. If you or your family would like to follow up or continue your care in a secure, supportive medical setting, I offer virtual consultations where we can address your symptoms in more depth and arrange referrals if necessary. Do not hesitate to reach out once you are safe and stable.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
