How to manage recurrent pneumonia in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 3-year-old daughter has been getting sick a lot with colds and fevers. This time, her fever is really high, and she is coughing constantly. I am worried because she is also more tired than usual and is not eating properly. Could this be some kind of pneumonia or a pneumococcal infection? I have heard about vaccines for children, but I do not know if she has already had them. Are there specific vaccines to protect against this? If it is pneumonia, what symptoms should I watch out for, and how do we treat it? Is this condition serious for small children? Should I take her to the hospital, or can we manage it at home for now? She has never been this unwell before, so I am really scared. What tests would you recommend to confirm if it is a pneumococcal infection? Also, is this something she could get again in the future?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

I am so sorry to hear about your child. This is an emergency and cannot be managed at home. Please take her to the hospital. Symptoms of pneumonia include fever, cough, and fast breathing in children. Usually, as part of their immunization routine, children receive the pneumococcal vaccine (about three doses). However, children can still develop pneumonia due to exposure to smoke, cold, or someone with pneumonia. Pneumonia can be serious for children and should not be treated at home.

I suggest she undergo the following tests:

  1. Full blood count.

  2. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).

  3. Blood culture.

  4. Urinalysis.

  5. Chest X-ray to rule out pneumonia.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
