Do I need retesting for a past positive chlamydia IgG result?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had an STD panel done exactly one year ago, and all the tests were negative except for one. Chlamydia Trachomatis IgG, which returned a positive result of 1.39 (the threshold is 1.1). At that time, I did not consult a doctor and hoped it would resolve on its own.

However, I have recently read that untreated Chlamydia can lead to complications. Since that test, I have not experienced any symptoms, nor have I had any sexual partners.

I do not have any pain or burning sensation while urinating, nor do I have any kind of discharge. Should I get tested again? If further testing is not necessary because I do not have any sexual partners or symptoms, please advise me on the next steps I should take.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I understand this is a worrying situation, and it is wise to seek clarification.

The positive IgG (immunoglobulin) test indicates a past exposure to Chlamydia, not necessarily a current, active infection. Since you have had no symptoms or new partners for a year, the likelihood of an active infection is lower.

However, to be certain and for your complete peace of mind, a repeat test is the safest course of action. We cannot prescribe antibiotics without confirming an active infection, as this contributes to the development of antibiotic resistance.

I understand your anxiety about clinics. Many now offer discreet at-home testing kits you can order online, or you could consult a doctor via a telemedicine service. This would allow you to get the necessary test and any potential treatment privately. Your long-term health is paramount, and resolving this will bring you great relief.

I hope this explanation clarifies the situation.

If you have any questions or require further assistance at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help.

Thank you.
