How to prevent cholera?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

We have hit a snag in our vacation plans lately. My family and I were all set for a dream getaway possibly even venturing to some private islands nearby in France. However, a friend recently informed me about cholera outbreaks in that place, France, putting a damper on our sunny vacation vibes. While I am not one to panic easily, I wonder if I should be concerned about this cholera situation. If true, what precautions should we take to avoid getting sick? Should we consider getting vaccinated, or should we cancel our plans altogether? Any guidance on navigating this cholera dilemma would be greatly appreciated. Kindly guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Vaxchora (lyophilized CVD 103-HgR) is an FDA or Food and Drugs Administration-approved single-dose oral vaccine for individuals aged two to 64 traveling to areas with active cholera (a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae) transmission. I suggest taking Vaxchora for at least 10 days before traveling to such areas.

Since most cases of traveler's diarrhea (TD) are caused by consuming contaminated food and water, common-sense preventive measures include peeling fruits and vegetables yourself, consuming fully cooked hot foods, and avoiding tap water, ice, salads, fruit juices, and cold sauces.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
