Can chronic migraine increase pain tolerance?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing daily migraines for almost eight months now. What is strange is that I often do not reach for medication because the pain feels almost manageable. My husband thinks I might just be used to suffering and not taking it seriously enough.

  • Is it possible for a 39-year-old with daily migraines to develop an unusually high pain tolerance?

  • Is my brain simply not registering the pain properly anymore?

I do not want to keep ignoring this if it could be dangerous.

Please guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

What you are experiencing is not uncommon among individuals with chronic daily migraines. Many people indeed adapt to the persistent pain over time, leading to a perception that their pain tolerance has increased. However, this adaptation does not mean the headaches are any less serious or that your brain is ignoring the pain signals.

Chronic daily migraines can be indicative of an underlying issue that requires thorough evaluation. If you have been experiencing daily headaches for eight months, it is highly advisable to consult with a neurologist or a headache specialist. These healthcare professionals can help determine the root cause of your migraines and develop an effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.

It is important to address these symptoms rather than dismissing them. While you should not panic, simply "pushing through" and accepting daily headaches as a part of your life is not a viable solution. Moreover, if you ever experience a sudden, severe headache or if you notice new neurological symptoms (such as weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking), fever, or any vision changes, it is crucial to seek urgent medical attention, as these could be signs of a more serious condition.

I hope this information helps you better understand your situation and the necessity of seeking professional guidance.

Thank you.
