Can cod liver oil affect the menstrual cycle?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I used to take cod liver oil as a supplement, but whenever I took it, I experienced irregular periods. My last period was three months before, but I still have not gotten my period. However, I am experiencing period-like cramps. I do not have any specific symptoms of PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) or thyroid issues.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is common for periods to be irregular due to hormonal fluctuations, stress, diet changes, or lifestyle factors. Cod liver oil, rich in vitamin A and omega-3s, may influence estrogen and progesterone levels, potentially affecting your cycle if you are sensitive to it. Since you do not have symptoms of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) like irregular cycles, acne, excessive hair growth, or symptoms of thyroid issues like fatigue, weight changes, and dry skin, those conditions are less likely to be the cause. Factors like exam stress, nutrient deficiencies (iron, B vitamins, healthy fats), or natural cycle variability at your age could also contribute to the delay.

Since you are experiencing cramps, your period may start soon. In the meantime, stay hydrated, eat iron-rich foods (spinach, nuts, eggs), and try relaxation techniques like yoga or deep breathing. A warm compress can also help with cramps and improve blood flow. If your period does not come within a week or irregular cycles persist, consider pausing cod liver oil and consulting a doctor for hormone tests like FSH (factors stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), prolactin, and thyroid) to rule out any underlying issues.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
