Can aging lead to a decline in cognitive and mental function?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old male seeking your professional expertise and guidance regarding a health concern related to cognition and mental function. I have been experiencing some changes in my cognitive abilities, and I am eager to understand these changes better and explore strategies for maintaining or improving my cognitive health. Could you please elaborate on the typical cognitive changes that come with getting older and the situations in which these changes should raise red flags? Are there specific tests or assessments that can help evaluate my cognitive function, and how can I access them? What are the potential causes and risk factors for cognitive decline, and are there preventive measures I can take? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

To assess cognitive changes, you need to go for an MMSE (mini-mental state examination). To prevent cognitive decline, you need to follow complex activities that boost memories. A risk factor for cognitive decline is vitamin deficiency of vitamin B12 and D. Also, uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension lead to cognitive decline. So, maintain all these parameters and do regular exercise at least 45 minutes a day. Avoid fast food and oily food. Eat salads and fruits and green leafy vegetables.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
