How to manage cold and mild fever in an infant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 4-month-old baby has had a cold for the last week. I have been giving her coriminic saline oral drops and nebulizing her, as prescribed by her doctor. Today, she has a mild temperature. What should I do? Do I need to take her to the hospital immediately?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

As per the limited information provided, it seems your baby is having a viral illness. A few more details will help support a better assessment to decide the management:

  1. Is she feeding well?

  2. Is she active and playful?

  3. Is there any difficulty in breathing, fast breathing, or noisy breathing?

  4. Is she sleeping comfortably?

Coriminic drops (Chlorpheniramine Maleate 2mg/ml + Phenylephrine 5mg/ml) contain two medications, and I would suggest you avoid them at this age.

If your baby is not experiencing any difficulty in breathing and is accepting feeds well, then I suggest using the following medications:

  1. Normal saline nasal drops: Two drops in each nostril every four hours for three days (keep the head end of the baby slightly low while instilling the drops).

  2. Paracetamol drops (100 mg/1 mL): 0.6 mL when the fever is more than 37.9 °C (degree Celsius).

Ensure she is feeding well. Please share other details and connect with me. I will advise if anything else needs to be done.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
