Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife had a second C-section, and we now have two babies. The doctor prescribed the tablet Drospirenone 4 mg to be taken daily for six months to avoid further pregnancy. However, she has not been getting her periods after the C-section and has also had intercourse without using condoms. Please suggest if there could be any pregnancy issues. Can she become pregnant while taking these tablets?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Please let me know how many months she has been taking the tablet Drospirenone. When was her last period, and when was the last day she took Drospirenone? I can understand that she has not had her period even once after taking Drospirenone. After completing each packet of Drospirenone, she needs to take a seven-day break from it. Only when she stops taking Drospirenone during this break she will experience her period.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

She has been taking Drospirenone for the last four months, and her periods have not returned after her C-section. While there were a few episodes of lochia in the weeks following the C-section, she has not had regular periods since then. She has been taking Drospirenone daily, including yesterday when she also had intercourse. Please guide us, is there a chance of pregnancy, or should she consider taking emergency contraception?

Thank you doctor for the reply,

No, she has not stopped or missed any days. She has been taking it regularly for the past four months without any gaps.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand the situation. It seems there might have been a misunderstanding. It is important to pause after taking it for 21 days and allow for a seven-day break. During this break, you should expect your periods to occur. Kindly pause the medication now and wait. Typically, your periods should arrive within three to four days. Please keep me informed. If your periods do not occur, feel free to book a consultation through this app, and we can discuss the situation further.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Please provide guidance regarding the possibility of pregnancy. Is it possible to become pregnant while taking Drospirenone, even if having unprotected intercourse?

Answered by Dr. Sangeeta Milap

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, you cannot get pregnant while taking Drospirenone, but it is advisable to undergo an ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis, as well as a urine pregnancy test right now, to alleviate any doubts.

Thank you.

I hope your queries are resolved and any further queries are welcome.
