Why do I have obsessive thoughts about appearance?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am here to consult about a compulsive thought, and, to some extent, the reality that my facial looks are constantly changing throughout the 24-hour cycle. I have observed that my cheeks get skinny and sink inward to the extent that it makes me look ugly, and sometimes, they are fuller and rounder and make me look handsome.

Now, most importantly, I have observed that it also greatly depends on my mood and sense of comfort and discomfort. In recent times, I have had great control over my thoughts and behavior. Sometimes, it kicks in and repeats the cycle of thinking about it. I am seeking some medical help because I cannot control my thoughts.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am glad that it is good that you are paying attention to changes in your body. Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed a dysmorphic disorder, a psychological thought of self-disfigured or elated.

So, I believe you will need cognitive behavioral therapy, which will help you recognize and change negative thought patterns and behaviors related to your perceived appearance flaws. Please take one tablet of Sertraline 50 mg for two weeks. If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
