How to manage constipation in my two-year-old daughter?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My daughter is 2 years old and has been experiencing constipation. She has not passed her stools in the past two days, and sometimes cries because of it. We have given her lukewarm water and bananas, but she still has not been able to defecate. Please recommend a medication to help alleviate her constipation.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I have reviewed all the tests and history (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity). Let us discuss the possibilities one by one.

I am sorry to hear that your little one is feeling uncomfortable. Constipation is quite common at this age and often improves with a few simple steps.

Since she has not passed stools for two days and is crying sometimes, we should help her soften her stool to make it easier for her to pass without pain.

A safe and commonly used option for a two-year-old is oral polyethylene glycol, also known as PEG or PEG 3350. It gently draws water into the stool, softening it. If this is available where you are, you can give her half to one teaspoon mixed in water once a day.

It typically works within one to two days. If PEG is not available, you can ask a local pharmacy for Lactulose syrup. The usual dose is five milliliters once or twice a day, depending on how hard the stool is.

In addition, continue providing warm water and encourage more fruits, such as papaya and pears. Try to avoid giving her too much milk for the next couple of days.

If possible, please let me know:

  1. Is she eating normally?

  2. Is she vomiting?

  3. Is her stomach swollen or very hard?

  4. Has she experienced painful constipation in the past?

Your answers will help me guide you more accurately.

I hope I have addressed all your questions. If there is anything else, please let me know.

Thank you.
