Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My daughter is 3 years old and has constipation sometimes. I am unable to understand why she gets constipated.
Can you please suggest her daily diet plan and what changes should be made in her diet?
She is very cranky and not a good eater.
Please suggest the needful.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern, and I want to assure you that you are not alone in facing this challenge. Many parents go through similar experiences with young children, so please do not worry too much.
Constipation is a growing concern in growing children, and it is something that can be addressed effectively with the right approach. It predominantly occurs because of changes in eating patterns over a period of time.
Since children at this age are developing their food preferences, dietary habits play a very important role. There are pathological causes too, which are often addressed only if dietary changes do not help. So it is always good to start with simple lifestyle and food modifications first.
The following dietary changes will be of help:
Increase water intake, as nowadays water intake is often neglected for various reasons, especially in young children who prefer other beverages.
Increase fiber in the diet, with meals that are rich in green leafy vegetables.
Add salads and vegetables to her daily meals wherever possible.
Avoid junk food, as it is a common contributor to digestive issues in children.
Let the child be more physically active, as it helps improve bowel movements naturally.
Add more fruits, especially fiber-rich ones such as apples, pineapple, berries, cherries, bananas, and kiwi.
If these dietary changes do not help, then further evaluation will be needed.
Feel free to connect if you have any other concerns.
I hope it helps with your query.
Thank you.
