Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 74 years old and in pretty good health. My current problem is that I am constipated. I took a teaspoon of MetaMucil this afternoon, then three gummy laxatives at midnight, and used a suppository, and nothing has really worked. I have gotten minimal results and have pain in my right side that my doctor said was stool buildup. He told me to take MetaMucil when I got home.
Should I take more? It is past midnight, and I am getting nervous about this.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query, and it is understandable to feel nervous when you have gone several days without a proper bowel movement, especially when the usual remedies have not helped yet.
The right-sided soreness your doctor mentioned is likely due to stool buildup, and this can take some time to resolve, even after starting fiber and laxatives. MetaMucil (psyllium husk) is helpful for regularity, but if you are already constipated and backed up, adding more fiber can sometimes make you feel even more full and uncomfortable unless enough water and a stool softener or osmotic laxative are used with it.
Since you have already taken MetaMucil (psyllium husk), gummy laxatives, and a suppository tonight, it is best not to add more doses at this time. Instead, the safest next step at home is to use an osmotic laxative like Polyethylene glycol, if you have it. This draws water into the stool and is gentler and more effective for slow-moving constipation. If you do not have it available, you can try a warm shower, gentle walking, and drinking warm fluids, which help stimulate your bowels naturally.
If you begin to have worsening pain, vomiting, fever, inability to pass gas, or your belly becomes very swollen, you should go to urgent care or the emergency department because these signs suggest more than simple constipation.
Your current medications, like Gabapentin, Latuda, and Bupropion, can all contribute to constipation, so this may be part of the problem. For now, do not take more MetaMucil (psyllium husk) tonight. Try an osmotic laxative in the morning, increase fluids, and if nothing moves in the next twenty-four hours or if your pain gets worse, seek medical care.
You are not in immediate danger based on what you described, but you do need a bit of careful monitoring until things start to move.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
