What is the treatment for dark circles and pigmentation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister, who is 27 years old, is worried about her pigmentation and dark circles around her eyes. She has been having this for the past few years, and it is more prominent now. There is no pain or itching but it is affecting her self-confidence. She tried many fairness creams but nothing has shown promising results. What would be the best treatment for this? She does not want to try any piercing procedures or laser therapies. Are there any other topical treatments available for this? Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I can provide some general suggestions based on common skin concerns. The dark circles under the eyes and pigmentation are two separate skin concerns. Here is what you can do to address them:

1. Dark circles under the eyes: The dark circles under the eyes are caused by a combination of factors such as genetics, age, and lifestyle habits like lack of sleep, dehydration, and excessive salt intake. To reduce the appearance of dark circles, you can try the following:

  • Get enough sleep: Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep every night.

  • Reduce salt intake: Excessive salt intake can lead to fluid retention, which can worsen the appearance of dark circles.

  • Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated can help reduce the appearance of dark circles.

  • Use a cold compress: Applying a cold compress to the under-eye area can help constrict blood vessels and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

  • Use a concealer: A good quality concealer can help camouflage the dark circles.

2. Pigmentation: Pigmentation is caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Some common causes of pigmentation include sun exposure, hormonal changes, and inflammation. To address pigmentation, you can try the following:

  • Use sunscreen: Applying sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher can help prevent further pigmentation caused by sun exposure.

  • Use a skin-lightening cream: There are many over-the-counter skin-lightening creams available that contain ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, and vitamin C. These ingredients can help reduce the appearance of pigmentation.

  • Avoid inflammation: Inflammation can worsen pigmentation, so it is important to avoid irritating skincare products and practices like picking at pimples.

It is always best to consult with a dermatologist for personalized treatment recommendations based on your sister's specific skin concerns. They can provide a proper diagnosis, suggest the best treatment options, and help develop a skincare routine that suits her needs. I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
