I had sex during my ovulation with my partner, and my menstruation was delayed for four days. I did a pregnancy test, and it was negative, but later menstruation started with clotted blood. I want to know what may be the cause.

In many cases, this can happen due to hormonal fluctuations, stress, travel, illness, or even anxiety about a possible pregnancy, all of which can delay ovulation or menstruation.

If ovulation occurred later than expected, the pregnancy test may be negative, and the period may come a few days late and appear heavier or more clotted than usual.

Another possibility is a very early pregnancy that did not continue (chemical pregnancy), where the test is negative by the time bleeding starts, and the body sheds the uterine lining, often with clots.

At 38 years, cycles can also become slightly irregular due to age-related hormonal changes. If the bleeding settles and you feel well, it is usually not serious.

However, if you have very heavy bleeding, severe pain, foul-smelling discharge, dizziness, or if this pattern repeats, it would be wise to see a doctor for evaluation, which may include a pregnancy test, ultrasound, or hormone check for reassurance.
