This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have not been getting periods for three months, but four days back, I got a positive pregnancy test, but now I got a negative pregnancy test. What should I do? Please let me know. I was completely confused. What should I do?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and I understand your concern.

I hear your confusion, and I will help you understand what might be happening.

Why a pregnancy test can be positive first, then negative: It can be a sign of early pregnancy with miscarriage. Sometimes the egg implants briefly and makes enough pregnancy hormone to show positive. But then the pregnancy stops developing, and hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) levels drop quickly, leading to a negative test after a few days.

False-positive test: Rare, but it can happen if the first test was faulty, expired, or read incorrectly.

False-negative later test: If the urine was diluted (drinking lots of water before testing), the hCG hormone may not show up.

Other reasons: Stress, weight changes, thyroid problems, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), or hormonal imbalance can delay or stop your periods. What you should do now:

  1. Repeat a test — Use an early morning urine sample (most concentrated).
  2. If possible, do a blood test for hCG — It is more accurate and shows the exact level.
  3. See a gynecologist — Since you have missed periods for three months, it is important to check for pregnancy and other medical conditions.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
