Can birth control pills affect the menstrual cycle?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have a late period. I have been on birth control for over a year with no periods. I have had my period after two months of stopping it. It lasted four days, but I did not get my period in the last month.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Periods can become irregular after stopping birth control, especially if you took it for over a year. As you had a period two months ago but did not get one last month, your body is still adapting. Possible reasons for the late period:
1. Hormonal rebalancing – After you stop taking contraception, it may take a few months for your natural cycle to become regular again.
2. Post-pill amenorrhea – Some women may be late or even skip their period after discontinuing birth control.
3. Lexapro (Escitalopram) – Antidepressants can, in some cases, influence menstrual cycles.
4. Stress or weight changes – Mild stress or weight fluctuations can cause failed ovulation.
What you can do:
1. Take a pregnancy test – Just to be sure, since it is a very common early sign of pregnancy, you should check it.
2. Track symptoms – If you have swelling in the stomach, but at the same time you have breast tenderness and menstrual cramps, you may have a fever soon.
3. Stay active and maintain a healthy diet – This can help balance hormones in the body.
4. Wait for another cycle – Visit a specialist if your period does not return the following month to check your hormone levels.
I hope this information helps you.
