What are the possible causes of a two-month delayed period?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24-year-old female, 164 cm tall, and weighs 80 kg. I am seeking a consultation today regarding an issue with my menstrual cycle. It has been almost two months without a period, which is the longest delay I have ever had. I took a pregnancy test two weeks back, which came back negative, and aside from a brief episode of dizziness, I have not experienced any other symptoms.

Since the beginning of last month, I have been taking Hikari Glutathione capsules, but I am not on any other medications. I have no known medical conditions or significant medical history.

Could you please help me understand the possible causes of this irregularity and advise on the next steps?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Since you have experienced irregular periods before and are now dealing with a two-month delay, it is important to consult a doctor to rule out any underlying causes. Below are some potential reasons for your delayed period, along with steps you can take moving forward:

Possible causes of irregular menstruation:

  1. Hormonal imbalances – Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or elevated prolactin levels can disrupt your menstrual cycle.

  2. Weight and body mass index – At 80 kg and 164 cm, your BMI is approximately 29.8 (categorized as overweight), which can impact ovulation and menstrual regularity. Weight fluctuations, in general, can also affect your cycle.

  3. Stress and lifestyle factors – High stress levels, poor sleep, or excessive exercise can delay ovulation and menstruation.

  4. Dietary supplements and medications – While glutathione itself is not typically linked to period irregularities, some supplements can have hormonal effects that may impact your cycle.

  5. Perimenstrual syndrome or ovarian cysts – Certain ovarian cysts may cause delayed periods, sometimes with few noticeable symptoms.

  6. Silent anovulation – Occasionally, the body may skip ovulation altogether, leading to a delayed or missed period.

What you can do now:

  1. Consult a gynecologist – It is important to visit a gynecologist who can perform hormone tests (for example., follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, and thyroid panel) and a pelvic ultrasound to check for PCOS or ovarian cysts.

  2. Monitor for other symptoms – If you notice symptoms like excessive hair growth, acne, or unexpected weight gain, these could indicate a hormonal imbalance or PCOS.

  3. Consider a repeat pregnancy test – If you have had unprotected intercourse, it might be worth repeating the test after a few days to rule out pregnancy fully.

  4. Track your cycle – Using a period tracker app can help identify any patterns in your menstrual cycle, which may assist in diagnosing potential issues.

  5. Healthy lifestyle changes – Maintaining a balanced diet, managing your weight, and reducing stress can help regulate your periods naturally.

Would you like assistance with finding specific lab tests or clinics near you for a consultation today?

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
